Budapest

Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is a gem of a European city awash in magnificent art, architecture and – literally – in hot water, with its abundance of natural hot springs.

Cut in half by the River Danube, Budapest’s two sides are connected by the 19th-century Chain Bridge, a favourite among romance seekers.

You won’t want to miss Trinity Square, home to 13th-century Matthias Church, the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion with their breathtaking views, or Buda Castle, the palace complex of the Hungarian kings, completed in 1265.

Take your pick of bathhouses, from Turkish-era, to Art Nouveau, or thoroughly modern, the most famous of which is the Széchenyi Medicinal Bath – Europe’s largest, supplied by two thermal springs.

Budapest is also famous for its grand concert halls and theatres, and enjoys a solid reputation as a food & drink capital, from its much-loved goulash to Villány’s big-bodied reds and sweet Tokaj. It all adds up to one of the most vibrant capitals in central Europe, just waiting to be explored.
